Stop Smoking Hypnosis

From the Hypnotherapy point of view, smoking can be a very complex issue.  This is because smoking always has strong emotional connections.  People smoke in exchange for some emotional payoff.   However, after many years of smoking, they usually forget what that payoff is and why they started in the first place.  They’re just “hooked” and it all becomes automatic.  In short… It’s a habit.

Some of the common reasons (excuses) people use for smoking are to:

  • Relax, settle their nerves
  • Fit in with others
  • “Reward” themselves
  • Wake up in the morning
  • Make them feel secure
  • Project a certain image to others
  • To _________ (you fill in the blank)

Smoking also involves routines.  For example, if you’re a smoker, I’ll just bet you always:

  • Keep your cigarettes in the same place.
  • Reach for them with the same hand
  • Take them out of the pack the same way
  • Keep your lighter in the same place
  • Bring the cigarette up to your mouth the same way
  • Light it the same way
  • Put it out the same way

         Talk about habitual behavior!

Consequently if you smoke you’ve probably done this all day, every day, for hundreds or thousands of days.  This is why I said that smoking can be a very complex issue.  And we haven’t even mentioned the addictive nature of nicotine – although I believe this is highly over-rated.  In reality, smoking is mainly a habit.  And the easiest way to break a habit, is to start a new one.  In this case, your new habit would be NOT Smoking.

To be effective, the proper Hypnotic protocol must address every detail of all the above.

Hypnosis can definitely help someone stop smoking – however it must not be seen as a “quick fix”… even though it is fast.  Hypnosis will not MAKE anyone stop smoking.  The smoker must sincerely want to quit for their own personal reasons, and they must be ready and willing to change.  Once they have those two things lined up, getting off the cigarettes is not nearly as difficult as they thought it would be.
