Stress has become so prevalent in our society that we almost consider it to be normal, and for that reason we often don’t take it seriously.  But the truth of the matter is, prolonged stress can lead to very serious physical and emotional problems.  It can even kill you.

So what exactly is stress?  To answer that question, we have to go back in time to when we humans were primitive.  Back before people lived in nice safe houses, in a relatively safe society, everyday life was a lot different.  It was mainly about basic survival.  We lived out in nature… and so did a lot of animals that would like to have us for lunch!  We were NOT at the top of the food chain – we were on the menu!

When confronted with the possibility of being injured or killed by some animal, we had only 2 choices, we could fight and hope to win, or we could run and hope to get away.  Fight or Flight.  These 2 options eventually became instinctual to us, and we still have them today.  From the perspective of avoiding predators, it made perfect sense and worked very well.  But this automatic response has a downside in today’s world.

When we perceive a threat, our brains automatically trigger the “stress response”.  It sends a signal to the body – primarily to the adrenal glands.  The adrenal glands release “stress hormones” (adrenaline & cortisol) that prepare the body to fight or run.  It accomplishes this by squeezing blood away from our vital internal organs, and sending it to the arms and legs.  The arms and legs are our most important body parts to either fight or run.  Meanwhile, our internal organs are being starved of essential oxygen and nutrients, our blood pressure goes up, and our immune system literally shuts down!  This “stress response” was only meant to be a short-term, temporary condition… vital to our survival.

In today’s world, we’re unlikely to encounter a saber-toothed tiger, but we can still feel stressed by things in our environment.  Things like worries, social interactions, high-pressure jobs, hectic work schedules, financial responsibilities and the pressures of raising a family can make us feel stressed.  But how do you fight these things?  How can you run from them?  Short of leaving society, moving to some remote location and avoiding your responsibilities… you can’t.  And therein lies the problem.

So here we are, all geared up by hormones, ready to fight or run, and we can’t do either!  Something has GOT to give… and that something WILL be our mind and/or body.
