Hypnosis for Chronic Pain
Hypnosis for chronic pain
Chronic Pain is pain that exists for at least 3 months after all physical healing has taken place. It is different from acute pain in that it is not easy to find the cause. Diagnosis can reveal no injury in the body at all, and yet the patient can be experiencing very debilitating pain. It is often unresponsive to physical therapy and pain medications – but you CAN use hypnosis for chronic pain relief quite effectively.
If you are experiencing physical pain that just never goes away completely, this would qualify as “chronic” pain. Chronic pain can lead to other problems such as despair, frustration, depression, anger and hopelessness. So it’s not just about the pain anymore – it’s about your entire state of being. This is why it’s so vitally important to find a way to manage that chronic pain in such a way as to include the emotional issues that can come with it.
INTERRUPTING THE CYCLE
As the above diagram shows, Chronic Pain is a vicious cycle. It often begins with a physical injury or accident, and ends with a never-ending cycle of both physical and emotional problems. Such pain can also be the result of neurological connections or “switches” within the brain that basically got stuck in the “On” position.
Although unpleasant, pain is our brain’s way of telling us that something is wrong somewhere. When the pain was originally caused by a physical injury, it’s our sub-conscious mind’s way of trying to protect us from repeating the thing that caused the pain in the first place. Generally it’s a good thing – even though it hurts. But problems can arise when the sub-conscious mind doesn’t know any better way to protect you.
With Hypnosis we give your subconscious mind some alternative ways to respond to the type of thing that first caused you the pain… should it ever happen again. Once it is satisfied with a new, better way to protect you, it will stop sending the pain messages. It will trade the pain for information. This is one of the most effective chronic pain management techniques available.
DEALING WITH THE DISEASE
When the pain is the result of a disease (such as arthritis) we must take a different approach to treatment. We must treat the disease itself to uncover the emotional and psychological reasons that are causing it. Once those issues are resolved, the pain will cease… or become significantly reduced. This is a more complex procedure that may require a few more sessions, but it does work.
Sometimes it’s not wise to get rid of the pain completely. After all, as I mentioned above, pain is a signaling mechanism that let’s us know there’s something wrong. This can be a positive thing – especially if certain physical activities could potentially cause even more damage. Although there are times when it is safe to eliminate the pain completely, each case is different and must be dealt with appropriately. Pain management is not a “one-size-fits-all” type of thing.
HYPNOSIS FOR CHRONIC PAIN – ADJUSTING THE PAIN LEVEL
In cases where it would not be safe to totally eliminate the pain, we can use NLP Hypnosis to help you alter your perceptions of it. For example, if you perceive your pain to be a 9 on the scale of 10, wouldn’t it be a relief to get that sensation down to a 4, 3 or a 2? Of course it would. And it is possible to change your perception of the pain and bring it down to a more tolerable level. With NLP Hypnotherapy I can give you tools that will enable you to reduce your pain any time you need to. Here’s a super good, 13 minute video on the subject…
